Ingredients

  • For the Syrup:
  • 2 cups granulated sugar or brown sugar
  • 2 cups water
  • 1/4 teaspoon cassia stick
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • Optional: heavy cream or ice cream
  • For the Dumplings:
  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 13 tablespoons cold butter, divided
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 4 to 6 Granny Smith apples (or other cooking apples) cored, peeled, and thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

    Make the Dumplings 

    1. Gather the ingredients. Preheat the oven to  375 F/190 C/Gas 5.

    2. Lightly butter a large, shallow baking dish.

    3. Combine flour, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl.

    4. Cut in 10 tablespoons of the butter until mixture resembles coarse meal.

    5. Gradually add the milk, stirring to make a soft dough.

    6. Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface into a 1/8-inch thick rectangle.

    7. Cut the rolled out dough into 5-inch squares.

    8. Place several pieces of apple on each square of dough. Sprinkle each with about 2 teaspoons sugar and a light sprinkling cinnamon and nutmeg to taste.

    1. Gather the ingredients.

    2. In a saucepan, combine sugar, water, cinnamon, nutmeg, and melted butter; bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Pour the syrup over the dumplings.
