Today I will show you how to make apple dumplings with cinnamon syrup. Apples are seasoned with sugar and spices before being wrapped in dough. A simple soft dough is wrapped around the sliced apples and then the apples are toasted with a delicious syrup.
Ingredients
- For the Syrup:
- 2 cups granulated sugar or brown sugar
- 2 cups water
- 1/4 teaspoon cassia stick
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/4 cup butter, melted
- Optional: heavy cream or ice cream
- For the Dumplings:
- 2 cups flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 13 tablespoons cold butter, divided
- 1/2 cup milk
- 4 to 6 Granny Smith apples (or other cooking apples) cored, peeled, and thinly sliced
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

Make the Dumplings

Gather the ingredients. Preheat the oven to 375 F/190 C/Gas 5.

Lightly butter a large, shallow baking dish.

Combine flour, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl.

Cut in 10 tablespoons of the butter until mixture resembles coarse meal.

Gradually add the milk, stirring to make a soft dough.

Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface into a 1/8-inch thick rectangle.

Cut the rolled out dough into 5-inch squares.

Place several pieces of apple on each square of dough. Sprinkle each with about 2 teaspoons sugar and a light sprinkling cinnamon and nutmeg to taste.

Cut remaining butter into small cubes and dot each dumpling with a with a few pieces of the remaining butter.

Moisten edges of each dumpling with water; bring corners to center, pinching edges to seal. Repeat with remaining dumplings.

Place dumplings 1 inch apart in the prepared baking dish.
Make the Syrup and Bake:

Gather the ingredients.

In a saucepan, combine sugar, water, cinnamon, nutmeg, and melted butter; bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Pour the syrup over the dumplings.

Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the dumplings are golden brown.

Serve hot with a drizzling of cream or a scoop of ice cream.
